Piece By Piece [documentary] - Nic Hill, San Francisco, 78 min, 16mm, 8mm, DV; Read the stellar Filmthreat.com Review of Piece by Piece The history of San Francisco graffiti art is written on a thousand walls, behind a thousand layers of paint. Dozens of artists spanning the last 25 years tell it like it is, explaining the thrills and agony of throwing up a mural on the side of a bridge or tagging the back of a bus. For anyone who grew up in the Bay Area, and maybe even more so for those who moved here, this documentary reveals much more than the history of this urban landscape. Embedded in the telling of the artistic waves that overtook the city streets is a chronicle of youth culture, police brutality, failed urban planning, and an untamed desire to make one's mark. As much as the breathtaking scope of this doc -- which features an incredible number of interviews and a staggering documentation of innumerable graffiti triumphs Ð the filmmakers have laid down a kick ass sound track from start to finish. DJ Qbert, Kid 606, D-Styles, People Under The Stairs, All Bets Off and Bored Stiff are just part of the rhythms that make up this seminal piece of SF folklore.
